About Off The Front

Vision ::
Off The Front is a new non profit (ID# 27-2022802) in Fresno, CA. Our goals are to continue to battle the issues that plague the impoverished areas of Fresno; namely education and childhood obesity.
The Specific Purpose ::
Off The Front is a cycling term for a rider who has broken away from the rest of the pack.  Similarly, Off The Front’s desire is to help kids break away from hindrances through goal setting and hard work so they can succeed in the race of life.
What Off The Front Will Do :: Phase 1
Off The Front’s goal is to give a bicycle to every 4th grade student in the impoverished areas of Fresno Unified who is able to achieve customized goals in academics, character, and service. The purpose of the bike is to motivate each child toward a healthy lifestyle through various incentive programs in the following years. We will reproduce our model on a yearly basis with new elementary schools.
What Off The Front Will Do :: Phase 2
Off The Front’s desire is to tackle childhood obesity by encouraging every child in kindergarten through 6th grade to actively commute to school. Students’ backpacks will be equipped with an individual a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag that will be scanned as they ride, walk, or otherwise actively commute to school. Upon reaching predetermined benchmarks, each child will be rewarded for his or her efforts with small, but consistent incentives.
How Off The Front Will Measure Success ::
Two primary areas will determine success; academics and health.  In academics, the student’s overall performance should progress during the year they are earning their bike. With this incentive, improvements in the areas of Math, Reading, English-Language Arts, Science, etc… will be used as measurable goals.
Health benchmarks including body mass index (BMI), aerobic capacity, body composition, and blood pressure will be collected at the beginning and end of the school year for every child in kindergarten through 6th grade. Off The Front seeks to demonstrate that each child who has consistently participated in phase 2 of the program for an entire school year will have noticeably improved his or her overall health.
How Off The Front Will Be Held Accountable ::
Off The Front (OTF) will give quarterly updates via newsletter to stakeholders in OTF. The update will include: 1) a highlighted story from a child in the OTF program, 2) updates on where each student is in relation to achieving his/her own goals, 3) identify data, projects, or programs in the last quarter that are addressing the goals of OTF, 4) and a list of upcoming happenings with OTF.
